Federal rules have required auto-reverse since 1993. That does not mean yours is still correctly adjusted, and it is the single most important thing about a door in a house with children.
The board test
Lay a two-by-four flat under the door and close it. It should touch, stop and reverse. If it keeps pushing, the force setting is wrong.
The photo eye test
Wave something through the beam as it closes. It should reverse immediately. Misaligned eyes are the most common fault we find.
