Questions we get every week

My door will not open. Is that the spring?

Usually, and there is a quick tell: if the opener strains and the door barely lifts, or you cannot lift it by hand with the opener disconnected, it is almost certainly a broken torsion spring. Do not keep pressing the button — you will burn out the opener as well.

Can I replace a spring myself?

We would rather you did not, and we will not talk anybody through it. A torsion spring stores enough energy to break an arm, and the winding bars are not optional equipment. It is a genuinely dangerous job, not a gatekeeping one.

Should I replace one spring or both?

Both, when there are two. They wear at the same rate, so the second is usually weeks behind the first, and doing them together costs far less than two separate visits.

Is it worth repairing an old door?

Often. Springs, cables, rollers and openers are all serviceable parts, and a sound door with new hardware is good for years. We will tell you when a door has genuinely had it — usually rust through the bottom section or a bent track.

How often does a door need servicing?

Once a year for an average household, twice if the garage is your main door in and out. Most of what we get called out for on an emergency basis is visible at a service six months earlier.
